Three Guidelines on Steps Followed in Auto Parts Recycling

Blog

Everyone buys a vehicle with the hope that it will serve its purpose for many years. However, a time comes when even with the best maintenance, a car reaches the end of its useful life as a unit. It is easy to have everything wrecked or to leave it to rust away in the yard. However, a smarter way to deal with the situation would be to have the parts recycled.  When your car's parts are recycled, you conserve the environment and save money. Understanding the steps followed in recycling is the first step to ensure that you properly manage the process.

Depollution of the Vehicle

The first thing that the auto wrecking company will do when they receive your vehicle is to assess and see how much damage it has suffered. The assessment will also help determine the parts that need saving and those that have to be discarded. After this assessment, the car will be depolluted. The depollution process involves the removal of the coolant, oil, petrol, gear oil, air conditioning refrigerant, brake fluid and windscreen washer fluid. These liquids are removed from the vehicle and either disposed of or recycled.

Dismantling the Vehicle

The second step in the process is dismantling the vehicle. This process is all about removing the parts that are reusable so that they can be resold. When these parts are removed, they are resold to people who need lower-quality car parts. The commonly dismantled parts include doors, hoods, bumpers, lights, seats, tyres, engine, transmission systems, catalytic converters and stereo systems, among others. When the parts have been dismantled, they will be added to the junkyards or recyclers catalogue, awaiting orders from vehicle owners who may need replacement parts in the future.

Destroying the Vehicle

When the useful parts of a vehicle have been removed, the useless parts remain. The shell that remains can be crushed or flattened so it occupies less space. The flattened metal is then fed to a machine that cuts it down to smaller chunks of metal. These chunks will then be processed to separate the pure metal from lead, plastic, and other compounds used in making them. The metal recovered can be used in various metal fabrication industries.

These are the steps followed in car wrecking and recycling. Before giving an auto wrecker your vehicle, get a mechanic or other qualified automotive expert to assess it.

Buying, Repairing and Modifying Automobiles

Hello, my name is William and my passion in life is riding my automobile around town. I love to buy old wrecks and then spend months bringing them back to their former glory. My wife thinks I am completely mad but I keep telling her that you don't have to be mad to do what I do, but it certainly helps! I was a later comer to the world of auto salvage and repair. It was about 12 months ago when my friend Neil introduced me to it. Neil is a real expert and has taught me everything I need to know.
